Perfume’s “Laser Beam” Prepares to Fire

Part of Perfume’s promotional video for their upcoming single “Laser Beam” (レーザービーム) released on May 10, 2011 by Tokuma Japan Communications.

UPDATE on May 12, 2011: Perfume has officially announced that a finished version of the promotional video for “Laser Beam” doesn’t exist. J Pop Asia reports: “The video began shooting in March, but filming stopped after the devastating earthquake that hit Japan. Filming never resumed.”

Things have been a little fragrant on Nihongaku these last few days. On Monday, I reported that electro-pop princesses, Perfume, will be featured in the upcoming animated feature film Cars 2. Today, we get our first official look at the promotional video for “Laser Beam” one half of Perfume’s upcoming single Laser Beam/Kasuka na Kaori (レーザービーム / 微かなカオリ). Apparently the video leaked on YouTube some time ago but has since been taken down undoubtedly at the strong insistence of the group’s label.

Laser Beam/Kasuka na Kaori will see an official release on May 18; a mere seven months since their last single, Nee.

How Perfume continues to crank out ear candy this sweet is beyond me. With every release Perfume proves their undeniable skill to craft irresistibly catchy pop songs. “Laser Beam” is no exception. Get an earful from the video above but be prepared for compulsively watching it multiple times and having the melody stuck in your head indefinitely.
